Alfred was born in Wolverhampton in 1908, the son of James and Ann or Amy Maria Dale. In 1911, they were living at 57 Walsall Street, Wolverhampton, along with Alfred’s siblings James, Elsie, and William. Alfred married Vera Marshallsay at Wareham in 1935, and they had two children, Jeffrey J. and Ann J., both born in 1938.
Alfred initially served as a Corporal with the 6th Battalion of the Royal Tank Regiment, and later became a Staff Sergeant in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (service number 7881560). At least one record refers to him having been awarded the Distinguished Service Order, but no further information was found. Alfred died on 14 May 1946 at New Cross Hospital, and he was buried at Wolverhampton Cemetery. The value of his effects was £199 2s. d.
