The son of George T. and Sarah Agnes Rowland, George was born in Wolverhampton in 1894. The family had moved to Nottingham by 1901, and George and his parents were still in Nottingham in 1911, along with his siblings Agnes May, William Henry, Elizabeth and Thomas. George was working as a carpenter’s apprentice.
George enlisted in the 2nd Battalion of the Notts and Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment (service number 266963). He was killed in action on 23 July 1918 in Belgium. He is buried at Nine Elms British Cemetery in West-Vlaanderen.
