Henry (mainly known as Harry) was born in West Bromwich on 13 April 1875, the son of John and Harriet Benton. By 1901, he was working as a baker and confectioner and living on his own with a servant, Annie Goulden, in Darlaston. He married Lilian Agnes Wattis in West Bromwich later that year. They had a son, John Wattis (1905) and a daughter, Elaine Agnes (1908). By 1911, they had moved to 3 Avondale Road, Wolverhampton, where Harry was still working as a confectioner. Neither of the two children were listed with their parents, however.
Harry does not appear to have done any military service during the First World War, but he did work with the Wolverhampton Borough Council as a special constable. Harry and his wife had another daughter, Barbara L, in Wolverhampton in 1917.
Harry died at New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton on 1 August 1965, by which date his address was 88 Birches Barn Road, Wolverhampton. The value of his effects was £17,232
