The son of William Ashwell, William was born in Wolverhampton in 1882. He was living with his father at 37 Mander Street in 1901, along with his siblings Henry, Arthur, Bernard, Ethel, Emily and Alice. William was a japanner. By 1911 he was living at 12 Pool Street with his aunt, Rose Vickers, his father, and siblings Arthur, Bernard and Alice. By now he was working at a cycle works.
At Salford, in Lancashire, William enlisted in the 2/7th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers (both numbers 3866 and 281384). He was killed in action 100 years ago today, on 10 October 1917 in Belgium. He appears on the Tyne Cot Memorial and is remembered on the war memorial of St John’s Church.
