Stewart was born in Boston, Lincolnshire, on 3 August 1891, the son of George Frederick and Frances Amy Dawson. He was baptised at St Botolph Church in Boston on 31 March 1895. The family were living in Sleaford in 1901, along with Stewart’s siblings Eveline Mary, Doris May, and Bernard Frederick. They were still in Sleaford in 1911, when Stewart was working as a floral artist and seedsman. Stewart married Dorothy Ida Evans in St Jude’s Church, Wolverhampton on 28 February 1917.

From 24 July 1916, Stewart was serving with the 3rd Battalion of the Auckland Regiment of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (service number 31233). According to his service records (which are available at the Archives New Zealand Te Rua Mahara o te Kāwanatanga, he appears to have been working (still as a seedsman) for Gibbons and Co of Wellington, New Zealand, although his wife was still living in Wolverhampton – her address is listed as 59 St Judes Road West. He attained the rank of Lance Corporal. Stewart was killed in action in Belgium on 28 Dec 1917. He is remembered at the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium.
