The son of John and Sarah Jane Dalloway, Joseph was born in Walsall on 27 November 1885, and baptised at St Paul’s Church, Walsall, on 17 December 1885. He worked as a porter and later a vansetter for the London and North Western Railway, and became a member of the National Union of Railwaymen in 1913. The same year, he married Gertrude Clarke at St Peter’s Church in Walsall.

Joseph served for 8 years in India with the King’s (Liverpool) Regiment (service number 9202). He rejoined his regiment when war broke out, but was killed in action on 27 Oct 1914. He is remembered at the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium and, because of his work for the railway, his name is listed on the memorial at Wolverhampton Railway Station.
