John was born in Wolverhampton in about 1892, the son of George and Sarah Lewis. In 1901, they were living at 10 Melbourne Street, Wolverhampton, along with John’s siblings Frank (later known as Francis), Charley, Albert, Flora, Harry, Ada, Harrold and Percy. He attended Dudley Road School. At some point, he worked for the Great Western Railway Company at Wolverhampton, but I have been unable to confirm further details. He later lived at 28 Pountney Street, Wolverhampton.

In around 1910 John enlisted in the 2nd Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment (number 8893), becoming a Corporal. He played football for his battalion. On the outbreak of war, he was called up and sent to France from 25 May 1915, where he was wounded, and died in hospital on 1 October 1915. He was featured in the Midland Counties Express on 6 January 1917, and is remembered at the Bethune Town Cemetery.
