William Dainty was born in Wolverhampton on 17 September 1894, the son of Clara and Henry Dainty. From 1901 onwards he atended Dudley Road Primary School. In 1901 they were living at 82 Pountney Street, Wolverhampton, along with William’s sisters Beatrice and Clara. They were at the same address in 1911, with additional children George, Edith, Walter, Charles Edward and Elsie. William was working as a labourer for a file cutter.

William enlisted with the 7th Service Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment (number 39377). He was killed in action on 21 August 1918. He is remembered at the Loos Memorial, as well as on the war memorial of St John’s Church.
