George was born in Aston, Birmingham, on 9 May 1899, the son of Annie Violet and Frederick Albert Keates. In 1908 he began attending St Saviour’s School, Wolverhampton. By 1911, they were living at 25 Lewis Street, Bilston, Wolverhampton, along with George’s siblings Joseph Henry, Louisa Mary and Alice Maud.
George enlisted with the 2nd/4th Battalion of the King’s Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry) (number 51826). He was killed in action on 25 June 1918. He is buried at Bienvillers Military Cemetery in France, and is remembered on the war memorial at St Philip’s Church in Penn (as his parents had moved to 25 Westbourne Road, Penn by the time of his death).
