The sons of William and Charlotte Cope, Maurice was born in Wolverhampton in about 1892 and Joseph in 1893. Maurice attended St Joseph’s School in Wolverhampton. The family were living in Newport, Wales, by 1901, and the household consisted of Maurice and Joseph, their parents, and siblings William, Annie and Mary, and his uncle Joe. Along with his brother, Joseph, Maurice later lived with his grandmother at Lower Horseley Fields, Wolverhampton.
Maurice enlisted with the 14th (King’s) Hussars (service number 8539), but was killed in action in Mesopotamia on 8 May 1916. An article in the Midland Counties Express on 6 January 1917 incorrectly gave his date of death as 8 June 1916. Maurice is buried at Amara War Cemetery in Iraq.
Joseph enlisted with the 2nd Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment (number 8938), disembarking on 9 November 1914. He was killed in action in France on 18 May 1915. Again the Midland Counties Express of 6 January 1917 wrongly gave the date as 16 June 1915. He is remembered at the Le Touret Memorial in France.
