The son of William and Fanny Newman, Henry was born in Wolverhampton in 1888. They were living at 29 Vernon Street, Wolverhampton, in 1901, together with Henry’s siblings Lily, Gertrude, Alice Rose, Florence, William, Adelaide and Edith.
Henry enlisted with the 4th Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment (service number 8951), with whom he was serving in India by 1911. Following sickness, he was discharged on 23 November 1918, and awarded the Silver War Badge (number B49546) on 2 December 1918. Unfortunately, he died in 1922. Whether this was a result of the same sickness is unclear, as he does not appear on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website. However, he does appear on the official Wolverhampton Roll of Honour.
