George was born in Trysull on 13 March 1886, the second son of the Headmaster of Trysull School, John and his wife, Anne G. Salmon. In 1901, they were living at Trysull, along with George’s brothers Tom T. and William O., and sister Ethel G. He taught as a pupil teacher at his father’s school until 1904.
On 27 October 1915, he enlisted in the 21st Battalion of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, becoming a Sergeant. On 17 July 1916, he was wounded, having received a gunshot wound in the chest, and he was discharged for being medically unfit on 15 February 1917. He received the Silver War Badge on 20 February 1917 (number 31579).
He married Dorothy M. Corbett in Wolverhampton in 1918, and they had a son, John C., born a year later. He died in Trysull on 6 May 1973.
