The son of Henry and Sarah Pooler, Arthur was born on 2 November 1887 in Wolverhampton. In 1901 he was living at Court 1, Brickkiln Street, Portobello, with his parents and siblings Henry, William and Kate. He married Sarah Walford on 14 January 1911 at Wednesfield parish church, and they lived at 113 Wood End, Wednesfield, Wolverhampton. Arthur was working as a coach fitting stamper. They had two children – Sarah (1911) and Joseph T. Edward (1913). They had two further children, Ethel M. (1917) and Arthur P. (1919).
On 3 March 1915, Arthur enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery (service number L/8283). His address by then was 49 Dillaway’s Lane, Portobello, and he was an iron labourer. In June 1915, he was temporarily released from military service to serve in W. H. Tildesley’s armament works at Willenhall. In 1917, he again received an offer to work at a munitions firm which paid higher wages than Wh. H. Tildesley. This appears to have been granted, until he was recalled to the field in France in January 1918. However, invalided to the UK in February 1918. He was eventually discharged on demobilisation on 31 March 1920. By then, his address was 45 Bridge Street, Portobello. Arthur died in Wolverhampton in 1974.
