Nellie Butler was born in 1877, the daughter of James Henry and Maria Butler. Her mother, Maria, died in 1880, and James remarried, to an Elizabeth Stallard in 1885. Elizabeth Stallard was born in Wolverhampton in 1852, the daughter of Charles and Catherine M. Stallard.
By 1901 Nellie was living with her father and step-mother at 30 St Jude’s Road, Wolverhampton. They had moved to Fairview, Codsall Road, Tettenhall, by 1911.
Both Nellie and Elizabeth served with the British Red Cross during the First World War. Both women served with the Tettenhall Working Party (Reg No 5252), from 24 October 1917 until 11 December 1918, attending 30 out of 57 meetings. Nellie also worked as a nursing lead at the VAD hospital based at the Old Manor House, Tettenhall, until 25 March 1919. Unfortunately I have not been able to confirm further details about their lives.
