Jack was born in Brierley Hill, Staffordshire, in 1891, the son of John and Sarah Turton. In 1901 and in 1911, he was living with his parents at Highfields, 3 Rounds Road, Bradley, near Bilston, along with his brothers Harold Benjamin, William, Frank, Simeon, James Ford Keyes and Harry. Jack was a pickler working with enamelled hollowware.
Jack enlisted with the Lincolnshire Regiment (service number 851), becoming a Corporal and a Lance Sergeant. On 28 May 1917, his name was listed in the Express & Star amongst the local men who had been wounded, but he recovered from his wounds.
In 1922, he married Violet Pursehouse in Dudley, and the couple had two daughters – Norma L. (1924) and Mary (1926) in Wolverhampton. Jack died in Wolverhampton in 1958
