Arthur Cutler, Express & Star, Heath Town, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, Powell Street, Sherwood Foresters, Silver War Badge, South Staffordshire Regiment, Wyrley Street
Arthur was born in Wolverhampton in 1888, the son of Joseph and Maria Cutler. In 1901, they were living at 73 Powell Street, Heath Town, Wolverhampton, along with Arthur’s siblings Maud, James, Lucy, Harry, Nellie, Ruth, Ernest and Leonard. By 1911, Arthur, his widowed father, and his two younger brothers were boarding in the home of Silvanus James Titley at 1 Wyrley Street, Wolverhampton. Arthur was now a brass castor at a hollowware foundry. In 1913, Arthur married Sophia Hough in Wolverhampton. The couple had three children – Elizabeth M. (1914), Gladys M. (1915) and Thomas H. (1918).
On 10 December 1915 Arthur enlisted first in the South Staffordshire Regiment (number 26746) and later in the Notts and Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment (number 70872). While serving with the latter, he was wounded, and his name appeared in the Express & Star on 11 January 1917. He was discharged as a result of his wounds on 6 June 1917, and was awarded the Silver War Badge (number 192216) on 23 May 1917. I have not been able to confirm details of Arthur’s death, although he did survive the war.
