Alfred was born in Tipton in 1893, the son of Alfred Henry and Annie Attwood Bott, and was baptised in Tipton in February 1893. They were living in West Bromwich in 1901, along with Alfred’s sisters Esther Holland and Beatrice May. The family were still in West Bromwich by 1911, but at some point he moved to Wolverhampton, where he worked for the postal service.
Alfred enlisted as a Guardsman in the 4th Battalion of the Grenadier Guards (number 29022), but was killed in action in France on 28 November 1917. By the time of his death, his home address was 30 Argyle Road, Wolverhampton, and the value of his effects was £128 14s. 2d. He is buried at Anneux British Cemetery and is remembered on the Wolverhampton Postal Workers Memorial.
