The son of Frederick and Elizabeth Foundling, James was born in Wolverhampton on 19 January 1898, and baptised at St Matthew’s Church, Wolverhampton on 10 March 1898. In 1901, they were living in a house at the back of 32 Coventry Street, Wolverhampton, along with James’s siblings Beatrice, Samuel, William, Fred and Sarah. In 1904, James started attending the Moseley Village Infant and Junior School. By 1911 they were living at 61 Moore Street, Wolverhampton.

James enlisted with the 15th Battalion of the Sherwood Forresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) (service number 24448). Unfortunately, James was wounded , and died of those wounds on 17 July 1918. He is buried in the Abeele Aerodrome Military Cemetery in Belgium.
