Frederick was born in Wolverhampton on 26 July 1883, the son of John and Fannie L. Cresswell. They were living with his brother Albert J. and sister Annie F. at 33 Mander Street, Wolverhampton, in 1901. Frederick was working as a compositor (printers).  He married Lily Mainwaring in Wolverhampton in 1908, and they were living at 24 Aston Street, Wolverhampton by 1911. Frederick was working as a printer compositor.

It is unclear whether or not Frederick did any military service during the First World War. However, he did serve as a special constable for the local Wolverhampton Council.

Frederick died on 27 December 1950 at Wordsley Hospital, Brierley Hill. By that date, his address was 65 Wynn Road, Wolverhampton, and the value of his effects was £162 18s. 8d.
