Charles (mainly known as William) was born in Wolverhampton in 1887, the son of William and Margaret Bach. In 1901 they were living at 13 Crown Yard, Bilston Street, Wolverhampton, and William was working as a watch maker. They were living at 49 Crowther Street, Park Village, Heath Town in 1911, and William was now working as a sausage skin dresser.

William enlisted as a Private with the 16th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers (number 35094). He was killed in action on 1 April 1917 in France. He is buried at the Savy British Cemetery in Aisne, France.
