Harold was born on 31 January 1883. In 1901, he was living with his parents and siblings Lilian, Constance M., Gladys D., and John Kenneth Samuel, in Llandrillio yn Rhos, Wales. Harold was working as a solicitor’s clerk and he, too, later became a member of Wolverhampton Cricket Club, as well as playing both cricket and hockey for the county.

Harold enlisted as a Lieutenant and later a Captain and Major in the South Staffordshire Regiment. He first served in France from 4 March 1915. On 24 March 1916, the Birmingham Daily Gazette recorded that he had been wounded, “though not seriously”. He later joined the Royal Air Force. Harold survived the war, and married England Women’s Hockey captain Agnes Evelyn Willcock on 28 April 1926 at St Jude’s Church, Tettenhall. The couple had a son, Patrick H. S., in Wolverhampton in 1927. Harold died in Birmingham on 24 August 1951.
