The son of Josiah and Mary Ann Nicklin, Josiah was born on 26 May 1898 in Wolverhampton. In 1901, they were living in Knowles Row, Portobello, with Josiah’s siblings Elsie May, Harold, Clara and William. By 1911, they had moved to Hughes Buildings, Deans Road, Moseley Village, Wolverhampton. Josiah had an additional four siblings – Joseph, Bertie, Doris and Harry.

Josiah enlisted as a Private in the 14th Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers (number 87453). Unfortunately, he was killed in action in France on 8 October 1918. He is buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gouy, France.
