Benjamin was born in Wolverhampton in 1895, the son of John Henry and Roseanna Martin. In 1901, the family were living in Cannock, but by 1911 they were at 31 High Street, Moseley Village, Heath Town, Wolverhampton, along with Benjamin’s siblings John Henry, Phoebe Ellen, Gladys Elizabeth, Rhoda Florence and William. Benjamin became a nut and bolt maker.
Benjamin enlisted in the 15th Battalion of the Notts and Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment (service number 23623). He was killed in action on 20 July 1916. He is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial, as well as on the memorials at Heath Park and Deans Road.
