Walter was born in Wolverhampton in 1878, the son of James and Hester Jane White. He married Alice Ada Clutterbuck in Wolverhampton in 1900, and they had a son, Walter, in 1901. They were living at 2 Court, 2 Jenner Street, Wolverhampton, in 1901, and Walter was an Edge Tool Bobber. By 1911, they had had a further five children (John, Esther, Joseph, Alice and Annie), and were living at 7 Pountney Street. Walter was now an Edge Tool Polisher.

Walter enlisted as a Private in the Northumberland Fusiliers (service number 366156) on 21 June 1916, but was discharged on 1 December 1917. He was issued with a Silver War Badge (number B/152800) on 5 May 1919. He appears to have been issued a Silver War Badge again on 21 August 1920 (number 511549) but the error was noted in the Silver War Badge Records as it states “Badge already issued”. Walter died in Wolverhampton in 1921. He does not appear on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site, but is on the official Roll of honour, so his death was presumably war-related.
