Francis (known as Frank) was born in Wolverhampton in 1882, the son of John H. and Lavinia Abbis. In 1901 he was living with his widowed mother at 3 Court, Snow Hill, Wolverhampton. He married Edith Coakley at Wolverhampton Registry Office on 16 October 1909, and the couple had eight children – Leslie Frank (1910), Launcelot (1911), Albert (1913) and Emma (1917), Edith M. (1920), Walter (1922), William H. (1925) and John (1927). In 1911 they were living at 18 Salisbury Street, Wolverhampton, and Frank was a tailor.
On 11 December 1915, he enlisted with the Army Service Corps (service number 400555). His address at that time was 14 Lower Vauxhall. Unfortunately, while he was serving, both Launcelot and Emma died, Launcelot in 1918 at the age of 6, and Emma in 1919 at the age of 16 months. He himself survived the war, and was discharged in February 1919. He died in Wolverhampton in 1935.
