Amy was born in Birmingham in 1884, the daughter of Thomas William and Elizabeth Lockwood. By 1901, they were living at 22 Red Cross Street, Wolverhampton, along with Amy’s siblings Alice, Henry, Frank, Edith and William. Amy was a pupil teacher by this date. They were at the same address in 1911, and Amy was now a fully fledged elementary school teacher.

During the war, Amy served as a Special Police Woman. She married Alfred Ramsden in Wolverhampton in 1918. The couple appear to have moved to Huddersfield, and had six children – Sybil E. (1920), Nancy (1922), Nellie (1924), Lilian (1925), Clarice (1929) and Sheila (1931). Amy died in Huddersfield in 1963 at the age of 79.
