Herbert was born in Wolverhampton on 16 August 1896, the son of Herbert and Clara A. Light. In 1901, they were living at 7 Green Lane, Wolverhampton, along with Herbert’s siblings Florence C., Amy, Gladys, Norah and Doris. By 1911 they were living at 25 Owen Road, and Herbert had an additional sister, Evelyn, and they were also joined by Herbert’s widowed sister Martha Ann Hammond and nephew George Hammond. Herbert had become a fitter for an electrical engineer.
I have not been able to confirm details of Herbert’s service during the war, but he appears on the Penn Road war memorial as someone who served but survived the war. A Herbert Light married a Laura M. Hodgkiss in Wolverhampton in 1923, and they went on to have two children – Laurie (1925) and Herbert (1932). Herbert died in Wolverhampton in 1972.
