Alfred (known mainly as Ernest), was born in Bilston in around 1899. He was the son of Fitz Albert and Gertrude Bendall, and his siblings were George Edwin, Henry Leslie, Arthur Francis, Gertrude Edith, Agnes Dorothy, Elsie Gwendoline and Constance Joyce. In 1911, they were living at 53 Wellington Road, Bilston.
On 17 September 1914 he enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment (number 14504), later transferring to the 10th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment (number 909). He was killed in action in France on 1 July 1916. The value of his effects was £250. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, as well as on the Bilston Town Hall Ward Roll of Honour.
