Alfred was born in Wolverhampton in 1876, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Edge. He married Mary Ann Smith on 31 May 1899 at St James’ Church, Wolverhampton. By 1911, they were living at 2 Lower Horsley Fields, Wolverhampton, together with their four children Alfred, Annie, James and William. Alfred was a moulder at an iron works.
On 17 October 1914, Alfred enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment (number 3252, and later 240771). His wife’s address at this time was 24 Ward Street, Wolverhampton. He served in France from 28 June 1915 until 8 September 1916, and was discharged on 17 May 1917. He was deemed to be “no longer physically fit for further War Service” because of sickness. He was granted a Silver War Badge on 2 June 1917 (number 188926). Unfortunately, he died in Wolverhampton on 17 April 1918, and he is buried at Wolverhampton Borough Cemetery.
