George was born in Wolverhampton in about 1880, the son of Henry and Clara Careless. In 1911, he was with his parents at 48 Salop Street, Wolverhampton, along with his siblings Nellie Abbiss, and Alfred,and his nephews John Careless and Frederick James Holt. George was an undertaker. He married Florence Gertie Steventon at St Paul’s Church, Wolverhampton, on 27 July 1916.

On 8 November 1915, he enlisted as a Signaller in the 138th Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery (number 67913). After his marriage, his address was 3 St Paul’s Terrace, Penn Road. There are a few pieces of correspondence on George’s service file, indicating that his marriage certificate was intially mislaid. It was found and returned to his wife on 22 September 1916, which meant that she started to receive her separation allowance. George served in Salonica from August 1916 until February 1919, and he was discharged on 3 April 1919.

The couple had a daughter, Norah S., in Wolverhampton in 1920.George died a year later at the age of 39. His name is listed on the Wolverhampton Roll of Honour, but not on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site.
