John Barratt was born in 1900 in Wolverhampton, the son of Selina and John Barratt. His address at birth was 19 Art Street, Wolverhampton, and he was baptised at St Mark’s Church, Wolverhampton on 25 November 1900. He was still at that address in 1901, together with his parents and older sister Ann. By 1911, they had moved to 22 Art Street, and John had gained four siblings – Selina Elizabeth, William, Samuel George and James Henry.
On 9 May 1915, John tried to enlist in the South Staffordshire Regiment, and was given the regimental number 4185. He gave his age as 18 years, and his trade as a carter. His father’s address was given as 81 Salop Street. However, he was discharged on 15 October 1915 for “having made a mis-statement as to age on enlistment”, as he was found to be under age. His character was described as “Fair. Inattentive to duty, fairly clean, sober.”
I have not been able to confirm further details of his life.
