Samuel was born in Wolverhampton in 1898, the son of Samuel Moses and Mary Ann Birch. In 1901 he was living at 104 Lucknow, Short Heath, together with his parents and brother Joseph C. By 1911, he was with his grandmother, Amelia Birch, at 34 Lucknow Place, Short Heath.
On 21 June 1915, at the age of 17 and 7 months, he enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was a Stamper’s Assistant living at 32 Lucknow Place, Short Heath (although written as “Shorthouse” on the Army Pension form), Wolverhampton. His grandmother was given as his next of kin. However, on 30 June 1915, he was “discharged having been irregularly enlisted” – presumably because he was too young.
Samuel married Fanny J. Fletcher in Wolverhampton in 1922, and the couple had five children – Alfred, Evelyn J., Beryl, Samuel L. and James W. – between 1922 and 1931. Samuel died in Bilston in 1958.
