Laura was born in Garforth, West Yorkshire, on 6 December 1901. She was baptised along with her sister, Annie, on 23 February 1906 at Thornhill Lees, Holy Innocents Church. Her parents were James and Emma Allott. In 1901 the family were living at 167 New Hold, Garforth, together with Laura’s other siblings, Willie and Elsie. By 1911 they had moved to Myrtle Avenue, Ravensthorpe, and Laura had gained two brothers, Earnest and Walter.
There is a Red Cross VAD card for Laura, giving her address as 48 Goldthorn Terrace, Penn Road, Wolverhampton. It is not entirely clear why she is staying there, as her commission came from “W. R. Yorks 6”. From 30 September 1918 she was working as a cook at Rugeley Camp Military Hospital, and by 13 May 1919 she was still serving.
Laura married Rowland Auty on 2 October 1926 at St Saviour’s Church, Ravensthorpe. Her address by this date was given as 4 Church Street, Ravensthorpe, and her profession was “weaver”. They had a son, Gerald, registered in Dewsbury in 1930. I have not been able to confirm details of her death.
