William was born on 25 December 1888 in Stafford, the son of Henry/Harry Arthur and Catherine/Kate Taylor. In 1901 they were living at 20 Saul Road, Stafford, along with William’s sister Sarah and brothers Henry A., John, Alfred and Bert. By 1911, they had moved to 71 Victoria Terrace, Stafford, together with William’s brothers. By this date, William was working as a “Putter Up” in the shoe trade. An article in the Express & Star on 24 February 1916 confirmed that he worked for Craddock Brothers Boot and Shoe Works from 1910 onwards.
In September 1914, William enlisted in the Army Service Corps at Stafford (number T2/015176). He first served in France from 8 July 1915 onwards. He died of gunshot wounds on either the 23 or 24 January 1916 (the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Soldiers who Died in the Great War have different dates. He is buried at the Mazingarbe Communal Cemetery in France.
