Herbert was born in Penn on 18 February 1891 to parents Thomas Charles and Emma Lawley. They were living at 209 Trysull Road, Penn, in 1901, together with Herbert’s brother Thomas Charles and sister Doris Lillian.By 1911 they were living at Norfolk Place, Penn, Wolverhampton. Herbert had become a house painter.

Herbert joined the South Staffordshire Regiment (number 5032) and later the Worcestershire Regiment (number 39997). On 12 June 1917, the Express & Star included his name under a list of local men who had been reported as wounded (although his service number is incorrectly written as “3997”). However, he appears to have survived the war. I have not been able to confirm further details of any marriage or children he may have had, but he died in Wolverhampton in 1972.
