Ivan was born in Willenhall in 1895, the son of Frederick William and Clara Pinson. In 1901 they were living at 3 Field Street, Willenhall, together with Ivan’s brother Fred and sister Plesance. Ivan attended Tettenhall College, and in 1911, Ivan was a Cadet on the School Ship, “Conway“, on the River Mersey at Birkenhead, Cheshire. This was a naval training school, although Ivan does not appear to have gone on to join the Navy.
Ivan enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment. He became a 2nd Lieutenant on 8 July 1915, as noted in the London Gazette. He was attached to the 70th Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps. He died of wounds on 4 May 1917. A discussion on this forum post appears to indicate that they landed their plane unharmed following engine failure, but were then engaged in battle on the ground. He is buried at the Halluin Communal Cemetery in France, as well as appearing on the Tettenhall College War Memorial.
