Alfred was born in Wolverhampton on 10 July 1895, the son of Alfred and Sarah Ann Fieldhouse. In 1901 and in 1911 they were living at 6 Halletts Row, Wolverhampton, together with Alfred’s sister Luisa and brothers George, Richard and Jack. Alfred was a brassdresser.

Alfred enlisted in the Royal Navy as an Able Seaman (Number J/16932). He first served on the Ganges II from 19 April 1912 and served on various ships, ending on the HMS Hebe on 11 February 1917. On 26 March 1918 he died from emphysema, and he is buried at Wolverhampton Borough Cemetery. By this date, his mother’s address was given as 27 Great Brickkiln Street, Wolverhampton.
