humphriesThe son of John and Mary Jane Humphries, George was born in Tipton in about 1894. In 1901 they were living at 128 Deanes Road, Heath Town, Wolverhampton, together with George’s siblings Mary Jane, Voilet [sic], John, Samuel, William, Leonard and Sydney. I have not been able to find much more about this man.

On 11 July 1913, he enlisted with the 1st Battalion of the Grenadier Guards (service number 16580), when his trade was recorded as butcher. He landed in Zeebrugge on 6 October 1914, but was killed in action on 12 December 1914. His photograph appeared in the Express & Star on 23 December that year. His address by then was given as 112 Wood End, Wednesfield. He is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial in Belgium.
