Alfred was born in Walsall in 1891, the son of George and Mary Bird of Darlaston. In 1901 they were living at 14 New Place, Darlaston, together with Alfred’s sisters Lucy and Lydia, brothers Enock, Joseph and George, and grandmother Lydia Green. They are at the same address in 1911, by which date Alfred has become a labourer in a galvanising works.

Alfred married Kate Boden in Wolverhampton in 1914, and their son Alfred was born in 1915 in Walsall. He became a Private in the Highland Light Infantry (number 18173), and later moved to the King’s Own Scottish Borderers (number 19047). He served in the Balkans, entering the War on 25 May 1915. He was killed in action on 1 July 1916, by which point his wife’s address was given as 2 House, 17 Court, Temple Street, Bilston.
