Frederick Allcott enlisted in the Staffordshire Regiment at Wolverhampton, but was born in Cheshire into a Canal Boatman’s family.

The CWGC record for Frederick Allcott has “Rank: Private Service No: 16384 Date of Death: 28/07/1916 Regiment/Service: South Staffordshire Regiment 2nd Bn. Panel Reference: Pier and Face 7 B. Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.” UK Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-1919 has more information, including his Birth Place: Nantwich Cheshire, Death Place: France and Flanders, Enlistment Place: Wolverhampton, and also states Killed in Action.

The South Staffordshire Regiment’s Battle of the Somme Roll of Honour includes a mention of him as follows: 2nd Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment 6th Brigade 2nd Division 27th July: Delville Wood 16384 Private Frederick ALLCOTT Killed in action on the 28th July 1916 Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial

The Army Register of Soldier’s Effects also has an entry for him showing that 4.11.1916 £5 18s 6d was paid to Fa(ther) Albert, and 21/10/1919 £9 to Mo(ther) Elizabeth, which would imply that he was unmarried. His Medal Roll Index Card was traced, but no other military records.

Frederick Allcott’s birth was registered at Nantwich, Cheshire in the 4th Quarter of 1895. He was baptised at Lilleshall, Shropshire on January 18th 1896, his parents being Albert and Elizabeth. Their Abode was stated to be Hamber’s Lane Wharf, and Albert’s Trade was Boatman.

On the 1901 Census the Allcott family is shown living at Hatherton Juncton Canal Shop, Calfheath Shareshill Wolverhampton, Hatherton, Cannock, Staffordshire. Albert age 57 was a boatman, Birth place Warwickshire, Elizabeth age 53 was born at Bridgnorth, William age 17 was born at Nantwich like Fred age 6, and the other members of the household were Joseph age 11 and Minnie age 10 both born at Wolverhampton and Sarah born Staffordshire.

The 1911 Census records F K Allcott, age 15, born Nantwich, Occupation Canal Boat Mate, address Jim (presumably the name of the boat), The Canal, Etruria Locks Stoke on Trent. The other members of the Household are William Mallard the Master age 32, Birth Place Hayward Staffordshire, Emma Mallard age 33 wife, Occupation Masters Wife of Canal Boat, born Tunstall, their children James age 7, and Mary age 2, and Elizabeth Clewes, niece, age 18 Occupation Third Mate and Thos Ashton age 15, Visitor.
