William Westwood was born in Wolverhampton in 1884. By 1901 he had become a railway engine cleaner and was living with his grandmother, Sarah Hall, at 80 Vernon Street. He later worked for Mander Brothers paintworks. In 1903 he married Ellen Starr, and they had at least two children, Joseph and David.

William enlisted in the 2nd/6th Battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment (number 41603), but was killed in action on 15 April 1918. He is commemorated at the Croix-du-Bac British Cemetery, Steenwerck, France, as well as on the Mander Brothers memorial.
