George William Barker is one of the “Brave Men of Whitmore Reans” commemorated in a memorial service at St Andrew’s Church, as reported in the Express & Star on 25 October 1915.

George Barker was born in 1893, the son of John and Alice Barker. In 1901 they are living at 15 Leicester Street, together with George’s sisters Cicely and Delia, and two boarders, Martha Hughes and Sarah Williams.

George enlisted in the 8th Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers (number 12329). Unfortunately he died on 26 September 1915, and he is commemorated at the Hill 10 Cemetery.
