Alfred A. Duckworth was born in Middlewich in Cheshire in 1895, the son of Alfred and Ellen Duckworth. The family moved to Wolverhampton and by 1901 were at 86 Lower Stafford Street. Alfred and his parents were joined by his sisters Alice, Eliza Ann, Ellen and Jessie. Whilst in Wolverhampton, he attended Red Cross Street School and later worked at the Oxley sheds of the Great Western Railway Company.
Alfred enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment (number 9767). He received wounds in action, and was transferred back to England, where he died in hospital on 3 July 1915. He is buried at Wolverhampton Borough Cemetery, and an article about him appeared in the Midland Counties Express on 25 November 1916.
