George Edward Fairclough was born in about 1893. According to the 1901 census, he was born in Wolverhampton, but I have been unable to find details of this birth. On the census he appears at 35 Swan Street simply with his father Frederick (a canal boatman) and brother Frederick, where they are boarding with the head of the household, an Emma Webb. There are no details of George’s mother.

George enlisted with the 2nd Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment (number 23630), but unfortunately died on 17 February 1917. He is commemorated at the Thiepval Memorial.
