John Evans was born in about 1880, based on the fact that an article about him in the Midland Counties Express of 18 November 1916 gave his age as 36. He was educated at Heath Town School. This means that he is probably the 21-year-old living at 71 Stafford Street in the 1901 census (together with parents William and Sarah, brother Charlie and sisters Alice, Lizzie and Rose). John Evans married a lady called Kezia and had two children, and moved to 58 Maxwell Road. I have not, however, been able to confirm details of his marriage and children.
John enlisted in the 2nd Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment (number 19085). He died on 30 June 1916, and is commemorated at the Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery in Souchez, France.
