John Powell was born in 1893 in Wolverhampton, the son of James and Annie Powell. In 1901, they were living at 8 Sedgley Street, together with John’s step-sister Sarah J. Knight, sisters Mary and Margaret, and brothers William, Thomas and Ernest. He attended Dudley Road Council School. In 1911, they are at the same address, together with John’s brothers Richard and Ernest Walter, and his niece, Beatrice Knight. John is a packer of hollowware at an iron works.
In September 1914, he enlisted with the 6th Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment (number 2775). He was killed on 13 October 1915, and was written up in the Midland Counties Express on 18 November 1916. He is commemorated at the Loos Memorial, and possibly also on the St Luke’s Church Memorial Blakenhall, where there is a Private J. Powell listed.
