George James Fisher was born in Wolverhampton in 1893, the son of Francis J. and Eliza Fisher. In 1901, the family are living at 26 Maxwell Road, and George and his parents are joined by his brothers Francis, Alec, Ernest and Robert. George went to school at St George’s School, Bilston Street. He worked for Sunbeam Motor Company, and later became a baker, working for Mrs Gregory of Compton Road.
George enlisted with the 18th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers (number 17050), but died from his wounds on 27 August 1916. He is commemorated at the La Neuville British Cemetery, Corbie, France, and he may also appear on the memorial in St Luke’s Church, Blakenhall, as this simply says “G. Fisher”.
