Edwin Percy Bird was born in Bolton-by-Bowland, in Yorkshire, in 1891, the son of Thomas and Sophia Bird (nee Jenkins). By 1901, the family were at Moseley Court, Bushbury, where Thomas Bird was the Gardener in charge. Edwin and his parents were joined by brother Thomas and sisters Winifred and Mabel. By 1911, Edwin himself has become a gardener, living and employed at Rookery House, Seighford, Stafford. Meanwhile, his family were still at Moseley Court, together with a further brother, Francis.

Edwin enlisted in the Royal Garrison Artillery (number 56347) on 8 December 1914 in Wolverhampton. Unfortunately he died of pneumonia on 4 January 1915, by which stage his parents had moved to Lynn Hall Cottages, Lynn, near Lichfield. He is buried at St Mary’s Bushbury, and is commemorated on the memorial located inside the church.
