Francis was born in Coventry in 1890, the son of Richard Ernest and Mary Ann Wood. By 1901, they were living at 21 Victoria Road, Upper Penn, Wolverhampton, along with Francis’s siblings Ethel A., Mabel I., Arthur R. and Bertha T. From April 1906 onwards, Francis worked for the Great Western Railway, as a Lad Porter, then a Road Motor Conductor, then a Porter. In September 1911 he transferred to the Motor Car Department. They were living at 4 Victoria Road by 1911,. At some point he married Dorothy Elizabeth, but I have been unable to find details of their marriage.
Francis enlisted in the Army Service Corps (number CMT/363). He was killed in action on 27 May 1918 in France. He is buried at the Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery in Saulty, France.
