Albert Edward Darby was born in Wolverhampton in 1895, the son of Mr and Mrs Charles Henry Darby. The family lived at 6 Phoenix Street in Blakenhall. Darby was an employee of Mander Brothers Ltd paint works.

Darby enlisted with the 1st/5th Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment (number 203382). He was wounded while serving, and died on 17 August 1917. He is is buried at Fosse No. 10 Communal Cemetery Extension in France.

He is commemorated on the Mander Brothers memorial, the memorial at St Luke’s Church in Blakenhall, and the main Wolverhampton Roll of Remembrance.
